Greetings, Michael,
At our University, we collect materials published by our faculty and make them part of what we call the Faculty Authored Book Collection or FAB Collection. We have been doing this for over ten years. We continuously remind faculty and new faculty members about the FAB Collection and regularly mention it in campus-wide committees, such as the University Library Committee. Library liaisons are always scouting new monographic publications that could be added to the FAB Collection. The word is already out, and we are at a point when faculty alert us of their forthcoming books. We purchase two copies in each case: one for the FAB Collection (which is part of the Special Collections), and another one for the general collection.
Here is the current criteria we follow for FAB books:
- Books published while the faculty member is affiliated with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).
- Books are acquired as long as they are registered with the Library Congress and have ISBNs.
- Self-published books are acceptable if registered with the Library of Congress.
- Only whole books are to be considered. No book chapters
- Faculty as editors of book or book series.
- Faculty as co-authors.
- Faculty as translators of whole books.
- No book reviews.
- No articles in encyclopedias.
- Books published only in eBook format are acceptable as long they are registered with LC and have an ISBN.
We regularly review and updated as needed the considerations above listed. We also have a web page in the library website for this collection. It is currently being redesigned, and it is has not been easy to maintain: https://www.tamiu.edu/library/FABCollection.shtml
Every few years we organize a reception in the library to honor recently published books by TAMIU faculty. Attached is the invitation to the latest such event. All FAB titles include two local subject headings in the bib record:
- TAMIU Faculty Authored Book Collection (FAB Collection)
- FAB Collection (TAMIU Faculty Authored Book Collection)
I want to emphasize that the FAB Collection is a collaborative effort. Almost all librarians are involved in one way or another.
I hope this helps,

Dear colleagues,
UConn Library is planning a program to start systematically acquiring UConn faculty-published books (monographs) for inclusion in our collections. Does your library run such a program? How is it scoped, e.g., do you buy books where your faculty contributed only a chapter? How do you obtain lists of faculty-authored works? Any tech specs would be very helpful, if you’re willing to share.
