RE: [ALCTS-acqnet] Non monetary incentives for staff

Hi,

Clemson University Libraries, offsite location, the Library Depot has little regarding amenities (a gas station/convenience store that has a small restaurant is within walking distance). Everything else is at least a 10-15 minute drive. Over the years, we have been creative with our incentives to keep the staff engaged and feeling a part of university community. We have a table dedicated to puzzles and tabletop games. Outside, we have a basketball hoop and an area to kick a soccer ball. Occasionally, we will have a potluck or other social event.

Colleagues,

I am hoping the collective mind will be able to assist. I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped.

Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money?
