We also regularly have jigsaw puzzles going in the staff area, and students take breaks from studying to work on an additional puzzle upstairs. We do the same thing, there is always a puzzle going. Our University librarian has agreed to buy us puzzles but we also have a staff member who buys them at tag sales and brings them in. Very popular. We have put together quite a few 1,000+ piece puzzles! It's nice because people can sit down and stare at something besides their computer screens for a few minutes, and it's collaborative! I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped. Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money? Many thanks!
