How could I have forgotten about our puzzle table! We do the same thing, there is always a puzzle going. Our University librarian has agreed to buy us puzzles but we also have a staff member who buys them at tag sales and brings them in. Very popular. (I am always the one that swoops in at the end - but I never put in the last piece)

We've repurposed a library table in our department to be a jigsaw puzzle table. We have put together quite a few 1,000+ piece puzzles! It's nice because people can sit down and stare at something besides their computer screens for a few minutes, and it's collaborative!

Subject: [ALCTS-acqnet] Non monetary incentives for staff

Colleagues,

I am hoping the collective mind will be able to assist. I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped.

Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money?

Many thanks!

Susan
