We developed a Wellness and Morale Committee. They create a monthly newsletter with fun facts and upcoming dates, birthdays, etc.
Staff and faculty were encouraged/invited to make up to a $25 donation each year to the committee, which purchases paper plates, napkins, etc, and a monthly dessert to celebrate employee birthdays. Then we have a potluck (Potluck Diplomacy) each month to celebrate together, with the committee-purchased desserts. Some of our favorite potluck themes have been: soup and salad day; build a sandwich day where everybody brought one ingredient to build fantastic sandwiches; baked potato day; taco day.... Simple things that don't create a lot of work for anybody but provide opportunities to come together and share a meal.
Additionally, we formed a staff book club. We rotate between people's homes. But you can also meet in a meeting room on campus.
During the cooler months, I do walking meetings with my team.
We tried personal recognition, but that created animosity and resentment. We have opted to go for inclusive, team-building activities.

Have you considered a walking club? Or a book club? We held a book club where everyone did mini-reviews of their favorite books and swapped them.
Could you reward yourselves by going to a free museum or historical society as a field trip?
It is hard to provide professional development and stress relief when you don't have any money, but hopefully the collective list can give you some free tools.
Good Luck!

Subject: [ALCTS-acqnet] Non monetary incentives for staff
Colleagues,
I am hoping the collective mind will be able to assist. I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped.
Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money?
Many thanks!
Susan
