We have a monthly "eating meeting" in tech services where people sign up to be the hosts. (usually 2-3 people per meeting) It is totally optional, but most people participate. We don't celebrate birthdays generally since we've had people who didn't celebrate holidays in our midst (a religious thing) in the past. The "eating meeting" also functions as a time to get all the employees together who work in the same physical area but are not always meeting formally together due to being in 2 different organizational divisions. So we eat and then we meet. It works well and people look forward to it. I just moved over to the Music Library but I will definitely be going back for these!

Hi, Susan-

I have had "Happy New Year" potlucks to celebrate the new fiscal year. I take advantage of various named calendar days throughout the year, such as Donut Day or Jelly Bean day to bring in treats for the staff. We've also had pop up parties just because. The tradition here for birthdays has been that the person whose birthday it is brings in treats for their unit or department. Hope that helps

Colleagues,

I am hoping the collective mind will be able to assist. I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped.

Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money?

Many thanks!

Susan
