In lieu of money, people really appreciate time off. (I think someone mentioned this already).
My version would be a rotating "early release" day once a month, where folks get to leave a few hours early (or come in a few hours late). It doesn't all have to happen on the same day, so coverage could be maintained.

Subject: [External] [ALCTS-acqnet] Non monetary incentives for staff
Colleagues,
I am hoping the collective mind will be able to assist. I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help improve the overall quality of work life within my department. These incentives cannot have a cost, as I have no budget. I have thought of: potluck gatherings to celebrate things like the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the academic year, birthdays, staff employment milestones; employee of the month recognition with an intranet news post, and there I have stopped.
Have any of you done anything like this? How have you improved the quality of life in your departments without the benefit of using money?
