I have been nothing but satisfied with using Midwest Library Service for our standing orders. One of my projects since starting my position has been to transition and consolidate our standing orders to be almost exclusively through Midwest. They’re still small, and their commitment to customer services shines through in every interaction I’ve had with them. They do an excellent job keeping their customers informed on the status of standing order publication schedules.

We previously had many standing orders through YBP. I found that it was not uncommon for a new title to be published for our standing order and YBP would miss it. We ended up behind by several books on multiple orders with them.

There are very few standing order requests that Midwest cannot fulfill. Because of their outstanding service, and because I want to continue to support the smaller vendors out there, I gladly send them as much business as I can.

There are probably Coutts/Proquest people monitoring this list but after spending several years cultivating a good system with Coutts – it got to the point that everything was running very smoothly – I now feel like a very small fish in a huge pond and not much is running smoothly since Proquest bought them. To be fair, we did just migrate to Alma and that has put a wrench in our well-oiled machine. But, wait, you say, Ex Libris is owned by Proquest, so everything should be integrated and seamlessly work together. Ha Ha.

The one thing I absolutely hate is their online ticketing system – you send an email to their customer service – and you get an automatic response back with a number assigned to your case. Which is meaningless because there is no Proquest online ticketing system that the customer can actually search by that number and check the status of the case. It’s purely an internal system that has no meaning to the customer.

Seriously, I’m sure those with Gobi will have the same complaints. There is little competition and we don’t have much choice – Proquest or Ebsco and we are stuck.

Dear all,

I have used both Coutts/Proquest and YBP/GOBI/Ebsco while working at various organizations. However, would be interested to hear what are the major shining moments of Coutts as well as YBP – with the new merger environment – the assumption is that bigger is better. However, I am curious who is still experiencing the shining service from both companies – then and now? And what are the highlight branding service issues that really make Coutts and YBP shine. Hope you can understand my coded language, but I don’t want this to turn into a roast but I would like to know how they both stack up with standing orders. I think the initial question may have only wanted names of vendors, I assume. But I am more interested in how they have done and what they are doing now in the standing orders realm. Bringing costs down is an matter of concern, but also as an international client – shipping, local support and other matters are also important. Thanks in advance.

At Michigan we have print Standing Orders with most of our standard vendors
our primary English Language vendor is Coutts/Proquest, but we also get them from Harrassowitz, Casalini, Ama Livre and a number of others on a smaller scale.
We have also used some smaller Michigan based vendors - but suggest that only for more mainstream titles, the more esoteric, the more problems we had.

What vendors do you use for your academic print standing orders? We currently use YBP/GOBI for most of our standing orders but am planning on evaluating other vendors in hopes of getting a higher discount. Thanks, Deborah
