Hello all,
While purchasing textbooks with grant money to place on reserves for students, we have finally been faced with the quandary of the textbook e-access card. Though I have tried to find actual print textbooks, there are several that I have not been able to purchase; and with the OER trend we see this issue only becoming more involved. Before we go creating our own wheel, however, have any of you already dealt with adding these kinds of student access cards to their collections and be willing to share your experiences? Here are our main questions:
1. Have you contacted/worked with the publishers and what has been their response? (For instance, if access is via IP authentication rather than username and password.)
2. What are your circ procedures/policies?
a. How have you secured the accessibility of each card? (For instance, if access is gained via username and password, once a student "checks out" that info from reserves, what is to prevent them from using it whenever they want for the remainder of the semester (or providing it to their classmates), potentially tying up that one access point regardless of future legitimate library users?)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
