Happy to see a discussion of alternatives to amazon! Powell’s online shipping from Oregon to Iowa for my own personal (habitual…. possibly an addiction…) book shopping has been just as fast as amazon for the last couple of years. After working in libraries for a long time, I worked for YBP/GOBI for 15 months (now moved “over” to EBSCO’s database side) and I know that libraries need an alternative to the major vendors at times. I also know that lots of librarians and library workers are socially conscious, and the way amazon treats their workforce is bothersome to me in that regard (speaking personally here, not on EBSCO’s behalf). Buying from Powell’s is great, fast, you are supporting an independent bookstore, and when I have been there in person I have spoken to employees who seem truly invested in libraries and reading and pleased with their jobs. :) Thanks for listening to my little rant. Libraries and reading are the pillars of our democracy. Read on!

In Portland, OR we use Powell's since it is here in town.

Do any of your libraries use a consumer website other than Amazon as your main source for books?

I believe BN.com<http://BN.com> offers pricing usually equivalent to Amazon along with free shipping. Does anyone have any experience with Barnes & Noble online ordering or any other recommendation for alternatives to Amazon?

Years ago we stopped using Baker & Taylor for most of our ordering in order to save money, so I’m not asking about library specific vendors at this point.

Thank you.
