My personal experience with audio versions: I've listened to three of these (that I can remember) in the course of my commute to and from work over the last few years and if not super "great" they're at least pretty good courses. They come across as what they purport to be: sets of fairly up to date academic lectures on a given topic adapted for this format. No wildly extravagant claims, no whiff of condensed over simplification. Quite respectable and academic.
In terms of the library, we've purchased DVD versions now and again at the request of faculty or of librarians and some of them have circulated modestly well. So if you have faculty who'd like them and they otherwise fit your collecting policies, go for it. They might be just the right supplemental material for some library patrons.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] Your opinion on The Great Courses DVDs
A few of our faculty are increasingly asking for our Library to purchase content from The Great Courses. In the past, I have been reluctant to add these to our collection, but now I am questioning why I have that way of thinking. Does anyone else have an opinion on the respectability of these courses? Do you purchase these for your collections? Perhaps I am being too critical.
