All
I am part of a small group in my library that are revising our guidelines
for tenure-track librarians. Part of the problem we are having is defining
"impact" or "growth over time". Does anyone have some information they can
share with me about how they evaluate their faculty librarians? Our
Provost is very big into measuring impact and with our field, I don't think
it's so cut and dried as using citation counts. We are having the same
problem is trying to define impact for a librarian who might want to apply
for promotion to Full Librarian.
I am especially looking for information on how to evaluate technical
services librarians.
What I am really looking for is benchmarks for evaluation. I think we all
have documents for promotion and tenure that state something like "made an
impact in the field" or "must show growth" or "demonstrate leadership and
initiative in their professional work" -
But how is that measured? Our university committee that reviews the tenure
files does not like the vague language we have in our guidelines - in their
words they want "a baseline standard from which the growth would begin and
some indication of the metrics and method of assessment"
So, do any of you have baseline standards? What sort of metrics do you use
for assessment? I am happy to summarize and share the information.
