Hello all,

I'm new to the list; and the nearest I get to being an acquisitions
librarian is that I spent a dozen years as Head of Technical Services of a
university library before turning independent many years ago. But I've
volunteered to help a friend who's the head of a small public library system
here in Israel check out options for more efficient ordering of
foreign-language printed books (mainly English, also other European
languages especially French and Spanish). Today there's no consortium for
bulk-ordering of foreign acquisitions among our public libraries (though
she's hoping to get enough other public library systems interested to set
one up) and most of them acquire books not published in Israel from one of
the two large bookstore chains, out of what those see fit to stock. The
selection is very small (mainly best-sellers, almost no non-fiction) and the
prices expensive. Books not in stock can be ordered via the bookstores but
take weeks or months to arrive. Acquisitions budgets for public libraries
here are severely limited and of course most of it goes on Hebrew-language
books published locally. But a significant demand still exists for books in
other languages.

We've been checking online ordering options. Amazon is out of the question:
only ships abroad by air mail which adds $30+ to the cost of each book. The
Book Depository looks like a good bet; and we'd like to know about other
U.S. vendors that could supply books also in other languages. UK or European
ones would too of course, but in our experience the UK book suppliers charge
the same figure per book as the US ones, but stick a pound sign ahead of the
figure instead of a dollar sign L - so the US is cheaper.

Are there any public-library acquisitions folks here who can say anything
about The Book Depository? Other vendors they'd recommend working with?

Many thanks for anyone who can help - either by reply to the list or
privately to me.

Judy Koren.
