Job Title: Technical Services Specialist, San Jose State University Library

About the Position
The University Library's Technical Services Specialist works respectfully and cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to perform duties under general supervision, but works independently to achieve specified outcomes reporting to the Technical Services Manager, University Library. This position receives work lead direction from the University Library's Head of Acquisitions. The King Library is a unique collaboration between the City of San José and the San José State University.
The purpose of this position is to oversee the processing of all University Library periodicals and standing orders, as well as maintain and troubleshoot the SFX Knowledgebase. The incumbent in this position ensures the seamless migration of print subscriptions into electronic format in support of the Library's digital initiatives; enables electronic journal and eBook access via the maintenance of SFX; performs database maintenance and runs reports on periodical and standing order records in the integrated online library system database (ILS); orders new University Library periodical and standing order subscriptions; and coordinates some processing of periodical acquisitions with City periodicals staff.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Maintains the SFX Knowledgebase, updating information in the SFX Administration Center for over 65,000 electronic resource holdings.
* Collaborates with the Chancellor's Office SFX Coordinator, other CSU Campuses and the Electronic Resources Coordinator to troubleshoot and ensure accurate linking.
* Utilizes appropriate vendor products to review and revise electronic resource titles.
* Researches and reports on electronic access options and coverage changes for journal subscriptions.
* Consults with Electronic Resources Coordinator and vendors to ensure electronic journal access for titles ordered.
* Oversees processing, ordering, cancelling and database maintenance of the Library's periodical and standing order (electronic and print) subscriptions.
* Monitors subscription format options to ensure seamless migration from print to digital format.
* Selects appropriate vendors considering availability, pricing and customer service
* Maintains periodical holdings in the ILS and in OCLC Local Holdings for CSJ and csj WEST Western Regional Storage Trust.
* Reviews, imports and prepares paper and electronic invoices for submission. Library Accounting
* Creates data lists and reports for Librarian Subject Liaisons, Head of Acquisitions and others using integrated library system.
* Maintains current information on inflation of periodical subscriptions and provides data to Head of Collection Development and Librarian Subject Liaisons.
* Performs regular database maintenance of subscription records as well as special database cleanup projects to maintain the integrity of the ILS database and provide accurate data.
Education and Experience
High School education or equivalent, and three years progressively responsible library experience or equivalent. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered. Some college coursework, library experience in an academic library setting and/or in an acquisitions library department, and experience acquiring and managing electronic resources preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with an integrated library system, such as Millennium, Sierra, Voyager, or Alma/Primo/SFX.
2. Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills, and excellent customer service and public relations skills.
3. Working knowledge of software applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database management, Internet and email.
4. Knowledge of library digital services.
5. Experience organizing and planning for multiple work priorities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* In depth knowledge of Technical Services and the ability to adapt work related procedures.
* Thorough knowledge of library methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling; Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
* Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of library; how the units of the library interact with each other and how the library interacts with the university.
* Working knowledge of the library's collection; classification schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems; on-line catalog; and computer applications in the library; library terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures.
* Thorough knowledge of the institutions and library's policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
* Working knowledge of software applications; including, but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database management, Internet and e-mail.
* Demonstrated expertise in using library automated system(s), especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area, including database maintenance.
* Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment; handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
* Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to new assignments and work under pressure.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group and work in a team environment.
* Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action.
* Ability to interpret, modify, and verify library records within established rules and procedures; understand and operate library computer systems and use the resulting output.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
* Must possess strong oral communication skills; excellent customer service and public relations skills.
* Ability to investigate and research more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
