Although Wiley was the first major publisher to embargo DDA-eligible titles up to a year from when an e-book is released, UNC understands that many more publishers are planning similar actions.
UNC’s DDA is via YBP with EBL being the only content provider. As an interim measure, UNC requested that EBL retrospectively identify titles in its DDA pool that do no long allow for STLs and delete them as well as exclude any prospectively.
UNC understands that YBP and EBL will work out a mechanism whereby DDA-eligible titles can be added to a library’s pool after the STL embargo has expired.
UNC considers this to be the optimal long-term solution since the primary goal of its DDA is to improve support for the academic enterprise by presenting faculty and students with a large number of potentially useful and relevant e-books for possible acquisition. Consequently, UNC wants to offer patrons as many relevant titles as possible and needs its DDA content providers to allow automatic inclusion via the profile of e-books that both initially and subsequently after an embargo period allow for STLs.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] inclusion or exclusion of embargoed STL titles in DDA pool?
Colleagues,
At Wake Forest University, we decided to exclude from our DDA pool the titles embargoed from STL for the duration of the embargo period. We aren't keen on using mediation because we don't like putting that obstacle in front of our patrons and we didn't like the other option of immediate triggered purchase. Has anyone else decided to exclude the embargoed titles or is everyone using mediation as a solution?
If you are using mediation, are you gathering data on how often:
a) mediation happens (especially relative to embargo)
b) you are making the e-book purchase
c) you are guiding patrons to another solution (like finding a similar resource)
