We do not have a formalized plan to provide or purchase e-textbooks for students. However, there have been occasions when we've chosen to do so. We have opted to use EBL (now a Proquest company), since their non-linear lending model allows for unlimited simultaneous use. There is a limit to the number of "lending days" for a book each year, but it resets back to 0 annually, and we have not yet exceeded the limit on any book. Full downloads are permissible, although that also increments the number of "lending days".

Dear Colleagues,

Might we ask for 5 minutes of your time for a survey on serial acquisitions? All responses are confidential. To avoid duplicate responses, please consult with colleagues within your library to decide who will complete this survey.

We have a brief survey for libraries here, or for publishers and library vendors here.

Please pardon duplication as we spread the word. The survey will remain open until Jan. 19, 2015. Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Hi!

Recently the prices some of our MIT journal subscriptions have increased substantially. Has anyone else noticed this? Or know why it might be happening?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Session Theme "Dynamic Transformations and Developments in the World of Serials and Other Continuing Resources"

World Library and Information Congress
81th IFLA General Congress and Assembly 15-21 August 2015, Cape Town

The Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section (SOCRS) invites colleagues to submit proposals for its two-hour open session at the IFLA Congress in Cape Town on the theme "Dynamic Transformations and Developments in the World of Serials and Other Continuing Resources."

The roles, activities and responsibilities of those involved with serials and other continuing resources are changing rapidly. Highly dynamic content is delivered to end users via traditional digital platforms and also via apps and mobile devices. Global access to information is essential and librarians have key roles to play in publishing and providing access to content as well as in participating in the creation, transformation and evaluation of resources. How can information providers and librarians ensure resources are created, discoverable, accessible and usable when and where they are needed? How can librarians navigate the myriad choices as we participate in the many transformations and developments currently underway in the world of serials and other continuing resources? In this session papers will be presented on some of the many developments in the world of serials and other continuing resources and how librarians continue to rise to the challenges.

We invite papers that address any or several of the following topics:

Open Access
Metrics and assessment
Libraries as publishers
Non-traditional publishing
Institutional repositories
Mobile access, carriers and platforms
Linked data
Text and data mining
New roles for serials professionals
Description and discovery
New acquisitions models

Proposals must include the following information:

  1. Name and institution of speaker(s)
  2. Contact information for speaker(s)
  3. Brief biographical information
  4. Proposal title
  5. Brief (250 word) abstract of the proposed paper
  6. Language of presentation

Important dates
Proposal submission deadline: Friday 20th February 2015
Notification of acceptance: Friday 20th March 2015
Submission of completed paper: 29th May 2015
Proposals should be sent by email to Meg Mering, Secretary of the SOCR Standing Committee mmering1_at_unl.edu by Friday 20th February 2015. Finalists will be notified by March 20th, 2015, and will be expected to submit final versions of their papers in one of the official IFLA languages by May 29th, 2015.

For more information, please contact Meg Mering, Secretary of Serials and other Continuing Resources Section mmering1_at_unl.edu or Sharon Dyas-Correia, Chair of the Committee s.dyas.correia_at_utoronto.ca.

Please also note that in accordance with IFLA's Open Access Statement, all papers that are presented at the WLIC 2015 should be available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

Note: All expenses, including registration for the conference, travel, accommodation etc., are the responsibility of the authors. No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a special invitation can be issued to authors, if required. The Cape Town National Committee and IFLA have worked hard to secure funds for Conference Participation Grants. Up-to-date information will be available on the Conference Participation Grants webpage.

Hi Amy,

Yes - I?ve noticed a substantial increase for the handful of MIT Press journals we subscribe to. I contacted them a few months ago and here?s their response: "Production costs, including staffing costs, have been rising significantly over the years and we need to cover those costs. We have not adjusted Design Issues' pricing significantly in the past but are now forced to do so."

Hi everyone,

Our college is moving to electronic textbooks through the Vital Source platform in order to reduce cost for students. We are also considering using some of the titles from our eBooks database (Books24x7) as textbooks, which would further reduce the cost to students.

Does anybody have experience using library eBooks (either single books or databases) as a substitute for textbooks? Or have you heard of this being done elsewhere? Currently our subscription of Books 24x7 does not allow for books to be downloaded which is a disadvantage.

I would appreciate any input regarding this as this is new territory for me. Any other vendors/databases that I should consider? What issues or questions am I missing out?

Thank you,
Asha

publish! with ALCTS
ALCTS Publications

Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS)
ALCTS's peer-reviewed quarterly online journal takes a critical approach to questions and challenges facing technical services professionals and reviews professional publications.

LRTS is the official journal of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. Regarded as one of the top technical services journals1, LRTS publishes research and "Notes on Operations" papers that have undergone double-blind peer-review. The LRTS Editorial Board is composed of a panel of experts who represent the various ALCTS sections, which include these subject areas and topics:

- Acquisitions, including licensing and economic aspects of acquisitions
- Cataloging and metadata, including MARC and non-MARC metadata, RDA, authority control, subject analysis, classification
- Continuing resources, including cataloging and management
- Collection development
- Preservation, including digitization
- Scholarly communications
- Training and education of technical services librarians and personnel, including continuing education

Have you given a presentation? Consider taking it one step farther by developing it into a research paper; LRTS editors and staff can guide you through this transition. Have you implemented an innovative process or resolved a thorny problem that other libraries are facing? It may be a good candidate for a "Notes on Operations" paper. New to publishing? - Read the resources for LRTS authors linked at http://www.ala.org/alcts/resources/lrts and the Proposal Guidelines for ALCTS Publications (http://www.ala.org/alcts/resources/info/proposal-guide) and suggested topics list, and

I'd check the license, as many licenses limit simultaneous users. Our Books24x7 license has a limit on users that wouldn't allow several people in a study group to use it at same time.

At UNC Charlotte, we only buy eBooks that have unlimited user rights and no DRM. Those can be used by anyone and as many as need be on campus. We have a what we call a textbook database that is just all books we either own or can acquire under those conditions that anyone is welcome to take a look at. We market it to faculty and have about 115 eBook titles being used this semester as textbooks free to students for use, although they are all titles that are published as standard books, often advancing scholarship in a particular area they are being utilized as textbooks by faculty.

take a look.
You can also see LSU's implementation of the same concept of eBooks with unlimited users adopted as textbooks by faculty at:

I would investigate if this plan complies with copyright.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] Using eBook databases for textbooks

Thank you,
Asha

Sometimes, our e-books end up being chosen by professors for their texts,
although it's generally just a chapter or two. They don't always tell us
their plans, either. We sometimes find out when students call to tell us
they can't "get in" to the e-book. We find that if we tell them to wait
about 5-10 minutes and try again, they'll probably get in because it's just
a matter of hitting the simultaneous user limit.

Our experience is that students look up an e-book and either print or
download a chapter and then get out of the book, making it possible for a
number of students to use the book over a reasonably short period of time.

Even if the professor wants to use the whole book, it generally goes
chapter by chapter from week to week and students just go in multiple times
to look at the chapter for the week.
