Subject: [ACQNET-L] Book House closing
Greetings,
Writing to check in with the Acquisitions world regarding the recent announcement from The Book House (http://www.thebookhouse.com/) that they're closing effective December 31st, 2014.
We have used Book House as a "boutique" jobber for many years and they have skillfully sourced quite a bit of obscure, complex, and seemingly impossible-to-purchase materials from us, ranging from print monographs to media standing orders to artists books from Spain to dance videos produced in a choreographer's own home to antiquarian materials for our Special Collections. They simplified one-off ordering, essentially, which would've either been stuck in the land of proforma invoices, the frustrating complexities of our statewide procurement system and guidelines, and so on. I understand that doing the work they've done is not exactly profitable for them, as it is the antithesis of wholesale, but still...the loss of this service is tremendous.
Do any folks out there have recommendations for jobbers who function similarly to Book House, or any recommendations for how to fill the void? Midwest Tapes has a new "request a title" service which may help us, but I'm still waiting on a reply about my question regarding the ability to fulfill rush orders. Midwest Library Service can handle print monographs, but no media and no rushes, and frankly nothing that requires special care, either. I have a cache of international and language-specific vendors who will be able to help somewhat, but in the end, there is no vendor that I have come across who can do what Book House has done!
Thoughts, feedback, suggestions, commiseration...all welcome!
Many thanks,
Meaghan
