About the Position

San José State University's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library supports 
the University's guiding principles of Spartan Pride, Unbounded 
Learning, Helping and Caring, Agility through Technology, and 21st 
Century Spaces by facilitating student learning and success, faculty 
teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement and creative 
uses of technology. In partnership with the San Jose Public Library, we 
provide all library users with access to information and learning 
resources in digital and print formats and foster lifelong learning 
opportunities for the entire community.



The University Library's Acquisitions Specialist works respectfully and 
cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library 
to perform duties under general supervision, but works independently to 
achieve specified outcomes reporting to the Associate Dean, University 
Library.  This position receives work lead direction from the University 
Library's Head of Acquisitions. King Library is a unique collaboration 
between the City of San José and San José State University.



The purpose of this position is to maintain the integrated online 
library system database as it relates to records and statistical reports 
of the Library's Acquisitions Unit and to acquire library resources in 
various formats. The incumbent in this position oversees the acquisition 
of electronic databases, both direct from vendors as well as via the CSU 
Chancellor's Office and other consortia; places firm orders; processes 
invoices for payment; and maintains the acquisitions' vendor database in 
CMS/Peoplesoft.



Education and Experience

High School education or equivalent, and three years progressively 
responsible library experience or equivalent.  Any combination of 
education and experience that provides the required knowledge and 
abilities may be considered.  Some college coursework, library 
experience in an academic library setting and/or in an acquisitions 
library department, and experience acquiring and managing electronic 
resources preferred.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·         Thorough knowledge of library methods, procedures and 
practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling; 
Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.

·         Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, 
coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and 
diverse demands are involved.

·         In depth knowledge of Technical Services and the ability to 
adapt work related procedures.

·         Demonstrated expertise in using automated system(s), 
especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area, including 
database maintenance.

·         Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of library; 
how the units of the library interact with each other and how the 
library interacts with the university.

·         Working knowledge of the library's collection; classification 
schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems; 
on-line catalog; and computer applications in the library; library 
terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures.

·         Thorough knowledge of external on-line databases, system and 
resources, including the ability to perform complex on-line searches.

·         Working knowledge of software applications; including, but not 
limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database management, Internet 
and e-mail; ability to learn PeopleSoft.

·         Working knowledge of library budget, accounting procedures, 
allocation processes and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in 
handling accounts and the budget process.

·         Thorough knowledge of the institution's and library's policies 
and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library 
and on-line resources.

·         Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, 
federal, CSU, SJSU, and City of San Jose policies and procedures; 
understand and interpret library rules and bibliographic standards and 
apply them with accuracy; provide standard information on library 
policies and procedures to library users.
