POSITION TITLE: Collection Development Librarian, Assistant Professor

The University of Vermont Bailey/Howe Library seeks an innovative, 
creative and service-oriented professional for the position of 
Collection Development Librarian. One of the fundamental 
responsibilities of the Collection Development Librarian is to assess 
curricular needs across the university and support effective teaching 
and research with the best and most cost-effective resources. This 
position reports to the Director of Collection Management Services and 
also works closely with Dana Medical Library to coordinate purchase 
decisions.

The successful candidate will have a firm grasp of current scholarly 
content available via print or e-publishing options while also focusing 
on future models of discovery and access beyond ownership: open access 
research, digital humanities archives, institutional repositories, data 
mining initiatives and open educational resources (OERs). Knowledge of 
scholarly communication, altmetrics, and standard criteria/tools for 
measuring resource use and the impact of research and scholarship is 
essential. This position requires the ability to work with campus 
partners to demonstrate the value of the library’s collections to 
academic departments in an era of increasing demand for accountability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage the selection, assessment and disposition of resources in all 
formats. Oversee patron-focused collections such as order on demand and 
patron driven acquisitions. Perform collection analysis to determine 
collection usage and effectiveness and to understand campus community 
needs. Chair the Bailey/Howe Collections Team to prioritize new resource 
requests and renewals. Participate in joint collection development 
activities with the Dana Medical Library.

Organize and conduct collection management projects (assessment and 
disposition). Supervise 1.5 FTE.
Collaborate with subject liaisons, faculty, academic departments and 
programs to ensure that UVM library collections are robust and 
discoverable. Coordinate collection options available via the Primo 
Central Index. Serve as subject liaison to one or more academic 
departments. Engage in scholarly activities and service to the library, 
the university and the library profession.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science 
program or equivalent degree;
• Demonstrated effectiveness in managing selection, analysis, and 
disposition of materials in all formats, including patron driven 
acquisitions programs;
• Relevant professional experience in establishing and maintaining 
effective relationships with faculty, campus partners, vendors, 
consortia, and publishers;
• Supervisory experience in an academic library environment;
• Demonstrated expertise with collection analysis techniques and tools
• Demonstrated proficiency with automated library systems, usage tools 
and standards.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of collection management, the publishing industry, 
electronic resource management, licensing and copyright issues, digital 
rights management, digital preservation and discovery systems;
• Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with 
colleagues, faculty and staff in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment;
• Knowledge of user needs and patron satisfaction studies; experience 
with discovery systems.

SALARY AND APPLICATION INFORMATION:
Salary is commensurate with rank and experience. The successful 
candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Library Professor. Minimum 
salary for Assistant Library Professor is $51,412. Generous benefits 
package includes: TIAA/CREF (or alternative plan), managed health care 
plan, and 22 days of annual leave. The library faculty is represented by 
United Academics.
