About the Position

San José State University’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library supports 
the University's guiding principles of Spartan Pride, Unbounded

Century Spaces by facilitating student learning and success, faculty 
teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement and creative 
uses of technology. In partnership with the San Jose Public Library, we 
provide all library users with access to information and learning 
resources in digital and print formats and foster lifelong learning 
opportunities for the entire community.


Reporting to the University Library's Technical Services Manager and 
receiving work lead direction from the University Library's Systems 
Analyst, the University Library Data Management Coordinator provides 
library services to San Jose State University and works respectfully and 
cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and planning for 
the management of data sets of records that provide access to the 
Library's vast and complex collection of print and electronic resources. 
The Data Management Coordinator provides high-level expertise and 
leadership support to Library Administration in formulating, developing, 
and modifying library policies and procedures for the management of 
statistical data and coordination of electronic and print resource 
record sets. The incumbent creates Sierra statistical reports and 
provides data analysis of the reports as well as working collaboratively 
with library departments to organize and ensure ongoing access to 
electronic resource records.


Education and Experience

High school education or equivalent, and three years progressively 
responsible related library experience. Any combination of education and 
experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be 
considered. Bachelor's degree, experience and skills in an academic 
library setting preferred.


Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent in a related field and three years 
of Library Assistant experience
- Experience with an integrated library system, such as Millennium, 
Sierra or Voyager
- Experience creating and analyzing statistical reports
- Knowledge of Library Digital Services
- Experience with MARC format in bibliographic records

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of library operations in 
Technical Services and their relation to overall library operations.
- Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the principles, policies, 
practices, and procedures of Technical Services and their relationship 
to overall library functions and other units as well as the ability to 
apply this expertise and judgment to address unique problems.
- Thorough knowledge of the library's collection; classification 
schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems; 
on-line catalog; and computer applications in the library; library 
terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures.
- Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine 
the best course of action.
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment; handle 
multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
- Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, 
SJSU, and City of San Jose policies and procedures; understand and 
interpret library rules and bibliographic standards and apply them with 
accuracy; provide standard information on library policies and 
procedures to library users.
- Demonstrated ability to employ analytical, problem-solving and 
independent decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a team environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of national standards and resources pertaining 
to library operations, including the ability to source and interpret 
information from such resources.
- Ability to interpret, modify, and verify library records within 
established rules and procedures; understand and operate library 
computer systems and use the resulting output.
- Comprehensive knowledge of external online databases, systems, 
resources, and trends pertaining to library data and services, including 
expertise in searching strategies.
- Ability to participate in long range planning through the collection, 
organization, analysis, and interpretation of data and information.
- Comprehensive knowledge of software applications such as: word 
processing, spreadsheet, database management, integrated online library 
systems, Internet and e-mail.
- Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation 
and spelling; ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence 
and reports.
- Demonstrated skills in event planning and execution; ability to multi 
task and work under pressure.
