**** excuse the duplicate posting****
Hello~
I have a couple of questions for the group about protective coverings for books both paperback and hardcover:
1. Does your library retain dust jackets when you purchase/receive new books?
2. If you retain the dust jackets, do you cover them with some sort of Mylar sleeve such as the Kapco Book Jackets?
3. When you purchase or receive SOFT BOUND books, do you stiffen the covers with some type of Mylar sleeve or laminate them?
4. If you do cover with Mylar or some type of laminate, do you do so in house or part of a shelf-ready/vendor process?
I ask because we do so at BSU and we are interested in learning more about what other do. We are in the process of deciding if perhaps the funding that is used to protect book jackets and cover paperback books would be better spent on obtaining more monographs and assorted materials for the physical collection. The literature seems very sparse around this topic.
My personal opinion is that it is damaging to the books and does little to protect or preserve the books. Most books I replace or damaged are dropped in puddles or someone has dropped coffee in it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
