Head, Resource Description & Metadata Services (FA391z)

The George Mason University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic
leader to provide direction and vision for our Resource Description and
Metadata Services (RDMS) department. As part of Mason Libraries
Technical Services Group, you’ll work with talented and motivated
librarians and staff who process a healthy volume of print and
electronic materials. This is a forward-looking department that
optimistically plans for the future of acquisitions and cataloging. We
have good workflows in place for receiving and cataloging, and consult
on and participate in metadata creation across the libraries. We are
looking for someone who is energized by cataloging and wants to be a
part of a team that envisions and enacts the future of cataloging at Mason!
This is a highly collaborative position, offering the opportunity to
continue and extend good relationships with a number of colleagues
across the Libraries, including the Head, Resource Acquisition, the
Information Analyst for Technical Services, Digital Programs and Systems
Group, Collection Development & Preservation, Special Collections &
Archives, and Liaison Librarians.
Some details: RDMS staff is comprised of professional faculty librarians
(3 FTE) and cataloging staff (8 FTE). This position manages ongoing
workflows and special projects for the Unit, which encompasses
receiving, and copy and original cataloging of library materials in all
formats, including digital, multimedia, and special collections
material. Incumbent determines best practices for cataloging and
descriptive workflows; provides quality control for processed materials
utilizing various metadata standards; ensures bibliographic integrity by
actively using authority control; and edits and updates database records
using batch process tools, such as MARCEdit.
Required Qualifications:
- ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent;
- Experience with cataloging operations including original cataloging
and quality control;
- Significant experience with RDA, AACR2, LCC, LCSH, MARC21, OCLC Connexion;
- Experience with new and evolving information access standards and
metadata schemes (Dublin Core, EAD, etc.);
- Demonstrated effective supervisory leadership;
- Demonstrated successful organization, communication and interpersonal
skills;
- Strong service orientation and commitment to the profession;
- Collegial, team-focused management orientation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of supervisory experience;
- 3-5 years of cataloging experience;
- Project management experience;
- Cataloging knowledge of at least one foreign language;
- Experience with providing access to digital resources;
- NACO training;
- Experience working with systems and tools currently in use at Mason
Libraries, including: Ex Libris Voyager and Primo, MARCEdit, Luna,
Omeka, and DSpace.
Appointment/Benefits:
12-month professional faculty appointment with rank dependent on
qualifications and experience. Health plan options and paid life
insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation
days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self.
