University of Waterloo Library
The University of Waterloo Library seeks a creative, dynamic and service 
oriented professional librarian for the position of Head, Collection 
Development.
The Head, Collection Development works collaboratively to lead the 
development of integrated information resource collections in evolving, 
dynamic digital and physical environments. The Head is responsible for 
the overarching processes associated with the development of the 
Library's Collection and the ongoing management of the licenses and 
associated subscriptions to support the research, teaching and learning 
of the University. The Head serves a critical role in developing and 
overseeing fiscally responsible approaches to collection acquisitions 
and licensing. The Head provides leadership to ensure efficient and 
effective Electronic Resources Management and Citation Linking services.
The Head works closely with Library departments, committees, and others 
as appropriate to advance the Library's strategic directions and to 
assess and evaluate the success of existing and new information resource 
collections. The Head works collaboratively to lead the development and 
implementation of effective workflows as related to the e-resources 
lifecycle and print collection development. In these endeavours, key 
partners include the Library's Digital Initiatives Department, the 
Cataloguing Department, the Information Services & Resources 
Departments, and the campus Finance Department.
The Head, Collection Development reports to the Associate University 
Librarian, Information Resources & Academic Excellence. As the 
Department Head, the incumbent will provide leadership by creating an 
environment where departmental staff work individually and collectively 
towards achieving departmental and library goals.
The University of Waterloo Library is a member of the Canadian 
Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Research 
Libraries (ARL), the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), and the 
Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL).  The Library is a member 
of the Tri-University Group (TUG), along with member libraries at the 
University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University.  The TUG Libraries 
serve a combined student population of over 76,000, combined holdings 
exceeding 5 million, and combined budgets exceeding $45 million. TUG 
manages a shared Integrated Library System and a remote collection 
storage facility, enabling collaborative projects across the three 
library systems.

Education:

   *   ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree, or equivalent

Qualifications
Experience to include:

ˇ       Demonstrated progressive responsibility and experience in 
leadership and management with a proven track record of achievement and 
success in a library setting

ˇ       Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budget 
development and licensing issues

ˇ       Demonstrated ability to lead change, and identify and implement 
new resources and work methods; ability to identify and evaluate new 
opportunities effectively and efficiently

ˇ       Demonstrated ability to analyze data and synthesize recommendations

ˇ       Demonstrated ability to independently, as well as 
collaboratively, plan, coordinate, and implement effective collection 
development and eResources entitlements knowledge base projects, 
including managing multiple and simultaneous projects

ˇ       Demonstrated experience in leading and managing staff, including 
staff development and coaching

ˇ       Demonstrated experience in addressing challenges and 
opportunities associated with a rapidly changing environment

ˇ       Demonstrated commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence

ˇ       Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both oral and 
written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and 
build partnerships

ˇ       Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service oriented 
environment, which values collaboration and collegiality

ˇ       Demonstrated ability to interact with all staff in a respectful 
and sensitive manner
Technical skills to include:

ˇ       Extensive knowledge of the principles of proactive information 
resources development and management, license negotiations, and strong 
vendor relationships in a local and consortial environment

ˇ       Superior customer relationship management skills. Ability to 
maintain effective working relationships across multiple and diverse 
organizations, and across levels within organizations from specialist to 
executive level

ˇ       Knowledge of collection assessment and evidence-based collection 
development principles

ˇ       Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills

ˇ       Knowledge of current practices and trends in the areas of 
information resources development and management, collection discovery, 
scholarly communication, higher education and assessment of library 
information resources

ˇ       Extensive knowledge and experience in electronic resources 
development and with Electronic Resource Management (ERM) System(s)

ˇ       Strong interest in the higher education sector and libraries, 
and an understanding of the trends, issues and challenges facing 
academic libraries in the provision of digital content
Assets:
ˇ       Experience in an academic library setting
This is a full-time permanent position. Librarians' at the University of
