Position Advertisement

The Library is seeking a creative and energetic person to lead its
Circulation Department. Reporting to the Head Librarian, the Head of
Circulation oversees all activities necessary to the circulation and
shelving of library materials and maintenance of membership data.

Responsibilities include the hiring, training, supervision and
scheduling of a staff of twelve full-time and part-time circulation
assistants and pages; assisting patrons and adjudicating conflicts;
directing special responsibilities of staff including interlibrary loan,
holds, books by mail, and gift and book sales; and establish and
communicate the service ethic which has traditionally characterized
front desk service at the Library.

The successful candidate will have:

*         Five or more years experience managing a library circulation
department

*         A Bachelor's degree and an ALA-accredited Masters of Library
Science (preferred)

*         Experience with Innovative Interfaces ILS

*         Demonstrated organizational and communications skills

*         Excellent teamwork, project management, and conflict
resolution skills

*         Experience supervising and evaluating staff

This is a full-time position with health and dental benefits, paid time
off and a TIAA-CREF retirement plan. Salary will be commensurate with

ABOUT THE LIBRARY:

The New York Society Library is an historic membership library founded
in 1754. The Library today is open to all for reading, reference, and
selected events, with circulation and other services by subscription.
The beautiful landmarked building dates from 1917 and includes reading
rooms, spaces for study, book stacks, and the Assunta, Ignazio, Ada and
Romano Peluso Exhibition Gallery. The Library has approximately 300,000
volumes and hosts a variety of special events, reading groups, and
workshops, as well as the New York City Book Awards.
