Hi Patty,

When you purchase PDFs for professors, do you first check with publisher if the library can print a copy and circulate? Sometimes, the PDF is for 1 distinct single user. Is there any case, where you make PDF available on your library’s server? If you purchase dataset, how do you make it available?

Thanks

Hi Curleen,

When we purchase PDFs for professors, if it is determined that they are appropriate for the collection, we generally will print them out and bind them so they can circulate.

Hi Curleen,

If we purchase a pdf we tend to make it accessible via our ILS, but put it behind a proxy so only our users can get to it. Hope this helps; please feel free to contact me directly if you need more details.

Best,

Being solely a distance education provider we provide access to many, many journal articles, book chapters, pdfs from other websites, all of which are used as course readings or support resources. Where they are part of course material (readings) we obtain copyright clearance, publish the pdf to our own internal server and make them accessible via the library catalogue. This means that only current students can gain access through their individual logins.

This does not include those articles, pdf or HTML, which are accessed through our subscribed databases – journals, ebooks etc. Access to them is again only available to students via their individual logins, with license and copyright being covered under our agreements with the individual database vendors.

Hi,
I recently purchased a PDF only toolkit/manual for an instructor. I am curious as to how other institutions handle this type of purchase. Do you print it out and make it available for check out, or do you provide access to the PDF file from your ILS? It did not come with any licensing or restrictions.

Thanks,
