My perspective on this is different, perhaps because I used to work for a vendor (for the record, not YBP, Blackwell, or Coutts). I’m always on the lookout for vendor services that can make our operation a little more efficient, whether the service is “free” or not. While I’d love for this one to be a free service, I also figure I’d then be paying for it in some other indirect, fashion since vendors are going to cover their costs somewhere.
In particular, I don’t object to paying this fee, or other similar fees from vendors, because we get something valuable in exchange. In this case, it’s not just short MARC records, but also very accurately encoded order records with fund and location codes, etc. These land in our Aleph system overnight attached to a short bibliographic record. If you cost this out, it comes in at about $20 per week -- cheap -- especially when I consider that this allows my staff to spend time on tasks other than manually keying in order records.

We are with Coutts/Ingram - they do not charge any such fee - exporting from their site is free.

Hello,
In regards to this question, I'm also curious why libraries agree to this fee. We don't currently use YBP as our main vendor, in large part because of this fee. Does anyone know the rationale behind YBP charging $1000 annually to use GOBI's export?

St. Olaf pays this fee as well.

Hi all,
I was wondering for those of you who use YBP as a vendor for ordering monographs, do you pay $1000 a year just to use GOBI Export? We recently received a GOBI Export subscription invoice for $1000 from YBP that came as shock. Our YBP Collection Development Manager explained to me that this is a standard fixed fee that all libraries using GOBI Export would be billed on an annual basis regardless of the number of books that were ordered using GOBI Export. Since our previous jobber, Blackwell, never billed us for using export function thru Collection Manager, so I was curious if indeed all YBP customers pay $1000 a year just to export short bib records from GOBI? As an extension to this question, I was also wondering for those of you who use a different vendor to order monographs, does your vendor charge you to export short bib records for creating POs?! I would be more than happy to summarize the responses I get if you are interested, just let me know.
Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences!!
Best,
Dung-Lan
