We started ebook firm orders through YBP in May 2011. We set up EBL, ebrary, and EbscoHost platforms initially, with EBL non-linear lending as our preferred platform. We also opted to purchase enhanced MARC records from YBP at $2 each since our staff was overloaded. We've gradually added some publisher platforms (Wiley, for example) because they have less DRM and offer multiple simultaneous use; when we have a journal package on the publisher platform, they usually don't charge access fees. We switched to EbscoHost as preferred platform when they changed pricing models last year.

The selectors and acq staff are all accustomed to YBP's GOBI, so it didn't require much change in workflow. We did add activating the titles in our ERMS so we can use it to collect usage stats; it's not time sensitive so the staff have been able to fit it into workflow.

We leave the decision to buy ebook or print book to selectors, although our dean encourages us to buy ebooks. We're currently discussing whether we should purchase or ILL print books when we have a title available as ebook; we've had a few patron requests to do so. We've also had a few requests to purchase ebook of title that we have in print. So far, the decision has been left to selector.

Feel free to email me off-list if you have other questions.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] question: ebook firm orders (not PDA/DDA)

Dear Colleagues, we are pondering ebook firm orders for individual titles (non-PDA/DDA, not ebook publisher packages), and I would like to the wonderful collective wisdom of Acqnet to find out you all have set up are your ebook firm ordering processes. We are thinking about this in several dimensions: pilot, setup, organization, content rights / licensing issues, workflows, and long-term with regard to scaling up.

Any ideas and on-the-ground experiences are welcome - thanks very much in advance for your insights.

Thanks & Best,
