Monographic Acquisitions Librarian and Coordinator of Collection 
Development - Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT)

Under the general direction of the Acquisitions & Electronic Resources 
Librarian, the Monographic Acquisitions Librarian and Coordinator of 
Collection Development serves as head of monographic acquisitions 
operations at Wesleyan University Library, collaborates with 
counterparts at Trinity and Connecticut Colleges on CTW Library 
Consortium initiatives involving monographic acquisitions, and provides 
strategic direction for monographic acquisitions initiatives at Wesleyan.

Responsibilities:

-Manages the monographic acquisitions functions and budget for the 
Wesleyan University Library, organizes and schedules projects, and 
serves as a contact person for faculty, staff, students, and vendors 
with monographic acquisitions questions.

-Keeps abreast of trends in scholarly communication and monographic 
publishing in print and electronic formats, and provides strategic 
direction within the library to integrate these changes, streamlining 
workflow and maximizing access in support of teaching, learning and 
research.

-Develops and adapts processes for the acquisition of media in all 
formats including audio and video.

-Works closely with the professional and support staff of all other 
library units to ensure that monographic acquisitions operations 
integrate with workflows of other groups or services in the Library.

-Coordinates with the Head of Cataloging and commercial book vendors to 
develop best practices for the importation of bibliographic monographic 
resources.

-Selects vendors, monitors vendor performance and negotiates vendor 
agreements for electronic book packages and other electronic monographs 
and one-time purchases.

-Supervises the Acquisitions Assistant. With the Assistant, adapts 
processes to take advantage of new technologies, establishes procedures 
when new systems are implemented, and covers essential duties of the 
Assistant when necessary.

-With the Acquisitions Assistant, handles complex or difficult order 
requests, reviews the status of outstanding orders, and communicates 
with students, faculty or others if material is not available, 
suggesting alternatives when possible.

-Serves as the Coordinator of Collection Development, convening 
Selectors’ and Collection Group meetings, providing regular reports on 
monograph spending by department and format, and generally supporting 
the work of managing the Library’s monographic collections.

-Evaluates monographs offered as gifts, supervising processing and 
acknowledgement, and consulting with selectors or other librarians 
regarding the suitability of offered monographs for the circulating 
collection.

-Selects materials in one or more areas of expertise and serves as a 
faculty liaison.

-Serves as a member of the regular Olin Reference Desk coverage rotation.

-Acts as the primary Wesleyan representative on the CTW Collections 
Group to explore consortial purchase options for monographic materials 
that will increase access while reducing cost-per-use

-Serves the Wesleyan community through library and campus-wide committees.

-Participates actively in regional and national professional 
organizations and contributes to the profession.



Minimum Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; Three or more years’ 
experience working in an academic library;Supervisory experience; 
Experience using the acquisitions or cataloging module of an Integrated 
Library System; Expertise in library acquisitions as well as knowledge 
of emerging trends in scholarly communication;Demonstrated time 
management and organizational skills; Demonstrated oral and written 
communication skills with a variety of campus and other constituents; 
Experience using financial systems, spreadsheet applications and other 
productivity applications



Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of academic publishing 
practices; Experience with international library acquisitions; 
Familiarity with Voyager Integrated Library System; Background in 
English Literature; Experience working with faculty
Working knowledge of one or more Western European languages in addition 
to English; Demonstrated negotiating skills
