I was a cataloger over 20 yrs. ago, so I feel sort of qualified to give you my 2 cents worth, although I will probably be breaking every current cataloging rule known to man. Not knowing what these things are (and how many there are), might you consider not cataloging them separately, but rather adding the info and links to the bib record for the main work as if they were supplementary volumes? You could put + (whatever #) pdf's after the cm. measurement, put the info for each one in a note and also in an added entry. This would alleviate the work involved in doing original cataloging for all this material, but still provide access.

Wearing my Acquisitions hat, I hate to buy these things, because I always feel that I am not getting my money's worth. My instinct is old school, and I want to print them, then have my university's printing & mailing people bind them inexpensively (e.g. we've had them make tablets out of outdated stationery), but my sense is that if the author had intended them to be printed, (s)he would have created a multi-volume work ... which is why my idea about hanging them off the main record might have some merit.

Typically we only purchase electronic resources that are hosted on a vendor’s platform as we don’t have the server space to store these materials locally; however our IT department approved loading these PDF files onto our server since they were relatively small.

There are no records for these items in OCLC, and it looks like our Catalogers will have to create unique records in-house. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with purchasing PDFs, or if you have a policy about purchasing this type of material. If you have purchased them, how do you catalog them?
