A few list members requested a summary of responses. Thanks to the two individuals who offered the following suggestions:

Does Massachusetts have a textbook review process to approve textbooks for public school use? We are one of the regional review centers and receive copies of the proposed textbooks up for adoption. We get the textbooks in in late August and the review process goes on until Dec. After the adoption process is over, we get to keep most of the material and add it to our curriculum materials center for use by our education students. Once in a while, a publisher will ask for the material to be returned but doesn't happen often.

Our state dept. of education sends us (for free) one student and one teacher edition of all the elementary and high school textbooks approved by the state curriculum review committee. You may want to contact your state's dept. of education to see if they might do that for you.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] Acquisition of El-Hi textbooks for academic library curriculum collection

Our Educational Resources Center maintains a collection of current elementary and secondary school textbooks, primarily teacher's editions, in all major curriculum areas. We are now able to add very few new textbooks each year because of our limited budget for these resources and the continuously rising costs. If anyone has had success in receiving free sample textbooks from the major publishers or has discovered other ways of enhancing a textbook collection for a curriculum library with limited funds and is willing to share this information, you are welcome to respond to me off-list at kstaubin_at_bridgew.edu<mailto:kstaubin_at_bridgew.edu> Thank you.
