ALCTS webinar: Libraries & MARC Holdings: From Works to Items
Date: March 21, 2012
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.
Description: This session provides a brief introduction to and overview
of the MARC21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) and ANSI/NISO Z39.71.
Discussion topics include the importance of standardized holdings for
such mission-critical library efforts as Item-Level Inventory Control,
InterLibrary Loan (ILL) & Resource Sharing, and OffSite Storage.
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this webinar, attendees will learn
the importance of holdings and adhering to holdings standards. Examples
of Single-part, Multi-Part, and Serial Holdings will be presented, as
well as the use and value of Summary Holdings Statements encoded within
Holdings records
Audience: Librarians/library staff who create/maintain holdings
information. Introductory session provides good background for anyone
interested in the 2-day SCCTP Serials Holdings Workshop that provides a
rich knowledge of the intricacies of coding MARC holdings.
Presenters: Everett Allgood is the Serials Cataloger & NACO Authorities
Liaison at New York University. He serves as a trainer for the Serials
Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP), and has been conducting
an extensive Serials inventory and barcoding project at New York
University for over ten years.
Wen-ying Lu is the Continuing Resources Cataloger at the University of
Colorado Boulder (CUB). Prior to joining CUB in 2010, she was a catalog
librarian and the linguistics bibliographer at Michigan State University
for ten years. She serves as a SCCTP trainer and co-authored the latest
edition of the SCCTP Serials Holdings Workshop Manual.
