Description

The Library at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for
a 12-month, tenure-track Access Services/Reference Librarian. The
successful candidate will be responsible for effective librarianship,
scholarship, and service. Specific responsibilities are described below.

Access Services: Provide leadership in access services by developing and
implementing policies and procedures based on national best practices
for all access services functions, including circulation, interlibrary
loan, course reserves, and coordination of library services for persons
with differing abilities. Provide the most effective delivery of
materials not owned by TCNJ Library, through purposeful direction of
interlibrary loan and document delivery services. Apply knowledge of
current trends in technology and academic publishing to formulate
long-term plans for access and delivery services within the context of
those trends. Oversee a department of seven full-time staff, two
part-time staff, and student employees.

Reference Collection Coordinator: Work collaboratively with other
librarians to evaluate, select and maintain the electronic and print
reference collection. Oversee the reference collection budget (currently
more than $160,000 annually, including reference serials).

Additional Responsibilities: Provide general reference service and
research assistance in collaboration with other public services
librarians. Some evening and weekend duties required. Candidates should
demonstrate strong commitment to the librarian-scholar model by
maintaining both high quality librarianship as well as an active program
of scholarly activity. Serve on Library and institutional committees,
and participate in professional organizations.

Qualifications

Required: Masters degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association. At least three (3) years relevant professional
(post-MLS) experience in access services. Experience with document
delivery and interlibrary loan. Familiarity with bibliographic utilities
and automated library management systems, including interlibrary loan
systems. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Initiative, flexibility and a strong service orientation.

Preferred: Supervisory experience. Ability to analyze the operational
needs of functional areas, especially through process assessment.
Project management skills. Experience with development and maintenance
of a reference collection. Reference experience in an academic setting.
Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to new and changing situations. An
additional graduate degree is desirable.

Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a highly selective institution that has earned
national recognition for its commitment to excellence. Emphasizing a
residential experience for its nearly 6,000 undergraduates, TCNJ is one
of Barron's 75 "Most Competitive" American colleges, and U.S. News &
World Report's No.1 public institution of its kind in the northern
region of the country. The College also offers focused graduate programs
in nursing, education and English. TCNJ was awarded, in 2006, a Phi Beta
Kappa chapter -- an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and
universities nationally. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation
for programs offered through TCNJ's seven schools - Arts &
Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities & Social
Sciences; Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science; and Science. TCNJ
faculty members and librarians are teacher-scholars and
librarian-scholars who share a commitment to liberal learning. TCNJ is
located within an hour, by train, of NYC and Philadelphia. The College's
campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township and is
known for its natural beauty. TCNJ has 39 major buildings, including a
library recently rated the 4th-best in the nation by the Princeton
Review. The TCNJ Library is a five-story, 135,000-square-foot facility
that serves as an intellectual, cultural, and social center for the
College. In addition to housing traditional library collections and
services, the building provides 26 group study rooms, two instructional
computer labs, a cafe, a late-night study area, and a 105-seat
multi-purpose auditorium. The Library's collections consist of more than
700,000 volumes that have been selected by faculty and subject
specialist librarians to support course offerings of the college and to
provide a broad representative collection of titles across many
disciplines. The library has access to over 33,000 periodical titles,
which are available in a variety of formats: print, online, and
microfilm/microfiche.

Appointment will be at the rank of Librarian II (Assistant Professor in
the Library), with a currently salary range of $63,966 - $99,162. Full
benefits package, including TIAA/CREF. This position is available
immediately.
