ALCTS webinar: Effective Subscription Management and Alternatives
Date: February 15, 2012
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.
Description: Libraries are facing opposing pressures of reduced budgets,
patron demand for new content, and increasing costs. This webinar will
present a method to collect and analyze cost and use data to evaluate
your journal collection (including how to analyze that Big Deal). The
presenters will discuss a variety of alternatives to subscriptions to
enable patron access to needed content. Presenters will also discuss how
to effectively communicate journal access changes with faculty.
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will have
learned a method to evaluate journals in the library's collection and
alternatives to subscriptions, in the event of cancellation or a
decision not to purchase.
Audience: All levels of library staff with responsibilities for
acquisitions and collection management
Presenters:
Deborah Lenares is Acquisitions, Serials, Resource Sharing, and
Collection Manager for the Sciences at the Wellesley College Library.
She has experience in both corporate and academic libraries where she
has migrated the collections and services from print to web based.
Deborah has a B.S. in Chemistry and a Masters in Library and Information
Science. Her interests as a librarian are ebooks, handheld reading
devices and evidence based management of library collections.
Steve Smith is the manager of the collection management and preservation
group at the Wellesley College Library. He is active in many
professional groups and library consortia, particularly the Boston
Library Consortium and the Oberlin Group, and is an adjunct faculty
