Hi Dena!
Here are some ideas to justify an acq librarian:
You need a professional to represent the library and negotiate the most
favorable terms with the many vendors a typical academic library deals with.
With so many resources available online, which usually require licenses, you
need someone who has expertise in licensing terms and conditions. At some
institutions, college or university counsel must sign off on license
agreements, and you need a professional to work effectively with legal
staff.
Libraries deal typically deal with hundreds of suppliers. An acquisitions
librarian must develop relationships with these vendors and work with them
to get the best terms possible for the library.
Acquisitions departments usually employ a number of support staff, who
order, receive, and process new materials. These people need a supervisor
who is current with the state of the library marketplace and the best
acquisitions practices.
An acquisitions librarian is expected to stay current with best practices by
keeping up with the professional literature. She or he must develop
training programs for staff to ensure that they are using the most current
techniques for material acquisitions.
A professional acquisitions librarian is required to know how to identify
and obtain elusive materials needed by college faculty.
A professional acquisitions librarian ensures that the collection represents
the college curriculum. Disciplines that are college priorities must have
depth and breadth. All areas of the collection need to be balanced with
different points of view.
I hope this helps, and also look forward to other contributions from the
list!
