Thank you to all who have responded. I see I haven't made myself
sufficiently clear.
We download records from several vendors into our ILS (Horizon). But of
the titles we purchased last year I was only able to download records
for about 80%. The other 20% are the problem. We buy a lot of single
source titles and odd stuff our patrons request. I need records for
those. An as an easy way to add fields and fix problems with the
records I can download would be a plus.
I've looked at MARC Edit on our cataloging manager's recommendation. It
appears to be more for editing existing records than creating new ones.
It also seems too complicated to explain to our order entry staff.
I need something that gives me a choice of format, has blanks to fill in
for ISBN, cost, author, title/subtitle, and a few other optional fields
then generates a brief record using that information along with an on
order call number and subject heading.
So far Jim Taylor's freeware product JTacq looks quite a bit like what I
want. But if anyone else has something they can recommend I'd love to
hear about it.
Thank you again for your help,

We're able to download brief MARC order records from our carts with
Baker & Taylor, Ingram, and Midwest Tape. (We use the Millennium
Acquisitions module for this.) The vendors should be able to help you
with the setup. It saves a huge amount of time!

Subject: [ACQNET-L] Making MARC records
Greetings all,
We need a way of creating brief, on order MARC records so that our
patrons will know a title is on order and they can place reserves before
we actually have the book in hand. These records will be overlaid with
OCLC records by our cataloging staff once we have the material so they
can be pretty bare bones, i.e. On order call number, ISBN, author,
title, maybe publisher.
Our ILS allows us to create such records in the acquisitions module.
But those records are problematic for a number of reasons. Our order
entry staff have been using MARC Magician. But our service contract has
expired and the company has raised their prices far beyond what we
consider reasonable.
Does anyone know of/have a relatively inexpensive tool for creating
brief MARC records?

"Good clean thoughts no doubt have their place in the scheme of
things, but there is nothing so satisfactory as a good evil one unless
it is the deed itself. And this is especially true when the evil
thought can be hurled with crackling vigor into the innocuous ranks of a
lot of neatly dressed clean ones."
