Hello, I want to thank Lauren Corbett, Susan Macicak and Marcia Thomas for taking time to respond to my query on weeding ebooks. You all have brought up good points that I shall take into consideration.

Thanks again!

If the number of e-books you’d weed would be extremely low, you might be better off spending your time on higher priorities for the library. The only exception I can think to make is if you believe that students and faculty are actually using outdated material because they aren’t finding more current info in your library and then weeding e-books might be a high priority.

Hello Dolores,

At the Univ of Texas – Austin, we weed ebooks as follows:

Our main demand-driven e-book program with EBL entails adding new titles weekly, which means we have a “risk pool” to manage. We annually remove any titles that had no usage (short term loans allow a five minute browse) over the previous fiscal year and can toggle any of those back on at any time should there be a faculty or student request.

Another “weeding” scenario is built into our subscribed ebrary Computers and IT package, which rotates in new titles and older ones are removed.

Best,

Susan

Our consortium purchased a large set of Net-Library titles over ten years ago. We recently weeded them. Each liaison librarian was responsible for looking at titles in his/her subject area and then sent a list of titles to be withdrawn to technical services, where we removed the bib records from our catalog/database (but not the consortial database, obviously, since other libraries in the consortium still had holdings attached to those records). As we add bib records for new consortial purchases and consider e-book plans of our own, life will get more complicated. We’re working on setting up a weeding schedule so will have to factor e-books into that plan.

Hello everyone,

Has your library been purchasing e-books for the past 5 or more years and now you might be trying to update content (or weed) on subject areas like Technology and Computer Science? E-books are good in solving storage problems, however, we still have to update our collection content, and I’m wondering if anyone has “weeded” e-books before. If you have, I would like to know about your process from start to finish.

Thanks.
