Director of Archives and Special Collections

Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library invites applications for the
position of Director of Archives and Special Collections. The position
reports to the College Library Director and is responsible for providing
leadership, vision, planning and management for the Department of
Archives and Special Collections.

Responsibilities include the development, organization, and preservation
of collections and a commitment to their access for research and
teaching; the cultivation of donor relations; the pursuit of grants to
support program initiatives; and the creation of programs and
exhibitions. The successful candidate will be a creative, experienced
and forward-looking librarian dedicated to undergraduate education and
the active support of faculty and student research.

The Director of Archives and Special Collections is an administrative
position that supervises 1 librarian, 1.5 support staff, and several
student assistants. As a member of the Library's senior management team,
the Director of Archives and Special Collections has the opportunity to
play a leading role in library-wide planning and operations.

The Gettysburg College Archives and Special Collections includes
historical manuscripts, institutional records, College photographs and
documents, personal papers, oral histories, over 11,000 rare books and
more than 2,000 Asian art objects. The department also houses rare maps
from the 17th and 18th centuries, primary resources from the Colonial
Era, Civil War letters and diaries, children’s literature,
Pennsylvaniana, and collections related to Dwight D. Eisenhower and
World War II. The collections support coursework across the curriculum
and original research by students, faculty, and the scholarly community,
as well as continuing exhibitions and programs on campus and online. For
a sampling of the library’s collections, see GettDigital.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication
skills, as a critical component of the job is collegial work with
library staff, faculty, students, alumni, donors and members of the
community. Like all librarians, the Director of Archives and Special
Collections will participate actively in collection development, serve
as liaison to one or more academic departments, serve on library
committees, and pursue continuing education and professional development
opportunities.
