ALCTS webinar: Linked Library Data: Tuning Library Metadata for the
Semantic Web

Date: March 16, 2011

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 2pm Eastern, 1pm
Central, noon Mountain, and 11am Pacific Time.

Description: This webinar will provide a brief introduction to the
linked data design pattern and the principles and terminology of the
Semantic Web. Examples will focus on the metadata and value vocabularies
used in various domains and the emergence of this pattern in libraries.

Additionally, the webinar will look at how linked data into the ongoing
development of RDA and IFLA's current efforts to harmonize the FRBR
family of standards. The role of metadata registries in managing large
and complex metadata vocabularies will be addressed. The presentation
will conclude with a discussion of how linked data principles can
broaden the utility of metadata standards like RDA by allowing
communities to utilize only the parts of the standard that are of value
to them.

Audience: This webinar is for anyone wanting an introduction to Linked
Data, RDF, and the Semantic Web, and who is interested in how library
data models and metadata standards could evolve to work more effectively
in this space. No prior knowledge of RDF or Semantic Web is required.

Presenter: Corey A Harper has worked as the Metadata Services Librarian
at New York University since 2007. Prior to that, he was a metadata
librarian and a digital library developer at the University of Oregon.
He has been actively involved in the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
(DCMI) since 2002, and has focused his professional work on discussing
Semantic Web technologies and Linked Open Data principles with
librarians in a variety of venues.

This is the fourth is a series of five webinars on RDA. The webinars
