Hi Dolores:
We have not gotten to the point of weeding e-books at OSU. However,
this is an issue that is increasingly making itself known. E-book
weeding could simply mirror local weeding philosophy for print
materials. However, I think many factors will shape the way an
institution does it in practice. Yes, e-books do solve physical
storage problems, but there are potential storage costs attached to
e-resources. Does the library host the content locally or access
through a vendor interface? Are there hosting/access fees? What
amount of usage constitutes retention of a title? Do you lease e-book
collections? How often are they updated? A number of older print
titles have been reformatted for electronic delivery and found new
life in increased usage. Should these titles be kept if the interest
continues even though the content is older?
To complicate matters further, are the e-book titles local access
only or is there consortia level access? If there is, should the
weeding be done cooperatively?
I know these are just more questions, but I think the answers might
help guide the weeding process.
