Our vendor profiles specify that paperback copies be supplied when available and they prebind them before shipping. We bind nearly all donated paperbacks added to the collection. The stacks include older paperbacks that were not bound and the shabby condition of many of these reinforces the notion that binding as a part of initial processing is a justified expense.

Several years ago, we also preferred the hardcover over paperback if both were available at the same time. We only bound paperbacks when they started falling apart after circulating. (There was one exception to that. We frequently ordered airplane books from a publisher in the UK. They arrived falling apart so we sent them to the bindery before circulating. They eventually changed printers.) When money became tighter, we changed our preference to paperback unless a faculty member or bibliographer specifically requested hardbound. There are a few reference titles available only in paperback. When the next edition is received, the reference copy is pulled and bound and then sent to the stacks. Otherwise, we still wait to bind them until they start falling apart.

Our library doesn't bind paperbacks until they become unusable or unmendable. We don't find it cost-effective to automatically bind any percentage/class of paperbacks. We do use KAPCO Easy-Cover https://www.kapco.com/cms/ site/41e719992a35faf9/index. html before processing on about 65% of our paperback acquisitions (any texts, items for reserve, books by alumni, professors, or denominational members, etc. get KAPCO covers automatically.)
As non-KAPCO-covered books circulate, they're pulled by the circulation staff for KAPCO Covers as they get banged around. We KAPCO in-house, so books aren't off the shelf for more than 5 days, and there's no need for re-processing.
Our policy for the past 8 years has been to purchase the hardback if the price difference is $12 or less. A couple of our vendors can set a threshold like this as a preference so it happens automatically for most of our purchases.

Dear colleagues,
My library would like to reconsider our acquisition and binding policies towards paperbacks. We currently purchase the hardcover if a title is available in both hardcover and paperback and we currently bind all paperbacks before they go to the stacks. I would like to hear what acquisitions and binding policies other libraries have towards paperbacks.
Does your library have a preference between hardcover and paperback for new acquisitions? If paperback is preferred, what is your binding policy towards paperbacks?
Does your library have a policy not binding paperbacks? Several years ago my library deferred paperback binding until the book was circulated once in order to cut binding cost. We resumed binding all paperbacks 2 years later. We now want to look into cutting binding cost again and wondering if we should consider defer paperback binding. Our circulation statistics showed about 50% of the paperbacks were circulated within 3 years of purchase so defer binding until first use may not save much in binding cost while additional cost is incurred for re-processing the same books.
Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and thoughts on this topic.
