Greetings ACQNET Subscribers: It just so happens that I have personally been in contact with a number of B&N representatives while I’ve been trying to solve the problem with sales tax that I posted about back on October 21 (the subject was: E-content purchases and sales tax ). I think I am making some progress with that issue, and will report back to ACQNET-L when I know something definitive.
I have let my contact know about the hue and cry that has resulted from the end of this purchasing arrangement. My contact confirmed that such an arrangement is still possible through brick and mortar Barnes and Noble bookstores. I realize that may not help some of you.
I strongly suggest that IF you have a Barnes and Noble store anywhere near you geographically, FIND SOMEONE at that store to talk to you. The person I talk to in my town is called the Community Relations Manager. From there, I then started working with the District Manager. You might however, want to wait until AFTER the Christmas holidays. This is the busiest time of the year for all retailers and they are pretty slammed right now.
Once you have explored the possibilities, you may still decide not to continue doing business with Barnes and Noble. If that ends up being the case, WRITE TO THEM and explain why. If enough of us do that, they’ll get the message.
Barnes and Noble and Amazon are in a stiff competition right now for our business – not only as individual consumers, but also as institutions. Ebooks are a big, and GROWING business (along with everything else they sell) and E-textbooks are on the horizon. We are not insignificant to them anymore.
Our best strategy is to keep talking to them and often.
