Who’s Driving, and Where? Incorporating Patron Driven Acquisition Models
into Library Collection Policy
Charleston Lively Lunch, Thursday, November 4, 12:30 PM – 1:45
Location: Holiday Inn, Ashley Room Thread: CD
Facilitators: Kathy Brannon - Coutts Information Services; Steve Carrico
- University of Florida Smathers Library; Paul Lightcap - University of
Florida Smathers Library; Robin Champieux - EBL
This session will explore how print and e-book acquisitions options are
affecting attitudes towards and practices of collection development and
traditional purchasing workflows. Through attendee participation, in
part elicited by a set of prepared questions, we’ll explore how demand
driven acquisitions models are being utilized for both p and e material,
are being integrated with traditional approval plans, and are being
applied in various settings, such as within consortia. This session will
aim to offer attendees strategies for success and avoiding pitfalls.
We will explore these and other questions:
1). Are you utilizing or thinking about utilizing a demand driven
workflow to purchase materials? If so, what the nature of the material
and your approach?
2). How does or do you foresee this workflow relating to other
acquisitions/collection development methods of selection, such as
traditional approval/forms plans and publisher packages?
3). How does your institution coordinate these various
acquisitions/collection development activities? For example, how do you
avoid duplication or allow duplication when desired? How is funding
managed across the various streams? What successes and difficulties have
you encountered?
4). Are you making use of or hoping to use any demand driven workflows
at a consortial level? What specific opportunities, issues, funding
models, or workflow hurdles are involved in establishing such a plan
within multiple libraries?
5). How can vendors best respond to and offer services in support of the
increasing use of demand driven workflows? For instance, how do you
envision traditional purchasing plans (approvals, forms, etc) evolving
both in regards to services offered and use?
6). How is your demand driven program affecting local/regional
collection development policy? How do you think the growing confidence
in demand driven purchasing will influence the practice of collection
development across the academic library community?
Kind regards and we hope to see you in Charleston,
Robin Champieux
