ALCTS webinar: Digital Preservation: An introduction to the basic concepts

Date: November 17, 2010

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 2pm Eastern, 1pm 
Central, noon Mountain, and 11am Pacific Time.

Description: This webinar will discuss the fundamentals of digital 
preservation. Upon completion of the webinar, attendees will be able to 
define digital preservation, discuss significant threats to digital 
materials, describe tools for addressing these threats, explain three 
key concepts of digital preservation, and be able to identify sources 
for further information on the topic.  Intended audience members are 
library staff with responsibilities for digital projects and those 
interested in getting an introduction of the basics of digital preservation.

Presenters:

Cathy Martyniak has been the Preservation Librarian at the University of 
Florida since 1999. She chaired the group that drafted the official ALA 
definitions of Digital Preservation. She won a 2008 ALCTS Presidential 
Citation for her leadership in bringing the important issues in digital 
preservation to the forefront in the Preservation and Reformatting 
Section (PARS) and Association for Library Collections and Technical 
Services (ALCTS) communities.

Emily Gore is Head of Digital Initiatives and IT at the Clemson 
University Libraries. Prior to joining the faculty at Clemson, Emily 
managed the statewide digitization program in North Carolina, NC ECHO 
http://www.ncecho.org. During the course of her career, Emily has 
received over $2 million in external funding to support digital library 
initiatives. Emily currently serves as a community board member for the 
HubZero Consortium, a sustaining member of the MetaArchive Cooperative, 
and as former co-chair of both the ALA Digital Preservation Interest 
Group and the ALA Collaborative Digitization Interest Group. She holds 
an MLIS from the University of Alabama and a BA from Clemson University 
and was recently recognized by Lyrasis as the 2009 NextGen Librarian for 
Technology.
