Hello Marc and fellow Acqnetters:
Initially we just removed the access card from the book, but because the access was mentioned throughout the text of the book, our users kept complaining they could not access the online version. So, for sometime now we have continued to remove the access information card, but also add a label to the outside front cover of the book that reads "The Library is unable to allow online or software access due to publisher restrictions".
Prior to doing this we did contact the publishers asking if there was some way we, as a Library, could give our users access, but the answer was a firm 'no'.
Hope this is useful.

Hi Marc
We don’t have a formal procedure as such, but we do remove or cover the access code so it can’t be used.
If the access code is printed on the inside of the book, we cover it with a sticker or a blank label. If it is a perforated attachment, we just tear it out of the book.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Suzie

Marc,
The same problem reared its head here sometime ago and after lengthy discussions we took a decision not to activate access. If the information is printed on a separate page , we remove the page. If it is printed on the inside cover, or on a page we cannot remove, we conceal it.
So far we’ve not had any fall-out from this course of action.

Stella Sandy

Hello folks: It has become increasingly common to receive in our library print monographs which include complimentary online access to an electronic version. The print monograph includes a code and instructions, usually printed inside the cover, on setting up an individual user account to access the electronic version. The use of this electronic version is governed by an individual user license, which prohibits sharing of the access information.
Because of the individual user license, the electronic version of the book is useless to us. Have any of you established procedures for processing such monographs? Do you conceal the code and setup instructions so that it cannot be used by anyone? Do you setup the online access, but then not share the access information? Or, do you simply send the book to the stacks without doing anything about the code and setup instructions? We have considered all of these things, but would obviously like to follow an established "best practice." Anything any of you could share regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
