CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR & ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN

The University Library of the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks  
a dynamic and knowledgeable librarian to provide acquisitions  
expertise and to help lead its Resource Acquisition & Management  
Department (RAM).  RAM is a newly-formed combination of acquisitions  
and cataloging that emphasizes fast, accurate, and efficient  
processing of both electronic and print materials.  The Acquisitions  
Librarian, working in close cooperation with colleagues in RAM and  
other departments, will oversee the expenditure of a materials budget  
of more than $8 million for an ARL library with a significant health  
sciences component.  The successful candidate will manage the  
Acquisitions & Rapid Cataloging Unit, lend expertise to the  
Electronic Resources Unit and the Resource Description & Access Unit,  
and play a significant role in managing overall department  
operations.  There will be substantial and continuous opportunities  
to improve processes, reporting capabilities, and vendor relations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

*      Provide leadership for a unit consisting of about 12 FTE staff  
that acquires print monographs and serials and provides copy  
cataloging for them via Voyager

*      Work closely with selectors, the Electronic Resources  
Librarian, and the Library Business Office to order, receive, pay  
for, and make accessible electronic acquisitions (60% of budget) and  
print materials (40% of budget)

*      Identify and provide leadership in implementing technologies  
to make acquisition and fast cataloging functions more efficient

*      Monitor and issue reports on library materials expenditures in  
order to maintain fiscal control

*      Work with vendors to arrange for effective and low-cost  
purchases and services

*      Oversee use of the Voyager acquisitions client

*      Establish and maintain copy cataloging standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the  
American Library Association; two years professional library  
experience or equivalent professional experience; experience in  
library acquisitions, including managing the business aspects of  
acquisitions; basic knowledge of current cataloging rules,  
classification schemes, and subject headings; experience with a  
variety of online applications appropriate to acquisitions;  
demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, staff, and  
users; supervisory and staff development experience; ability to  
manage detailed tasks; excellent communication and interpersonal  
skills that will contribute to a collaborative environment; keen  
analytical and problem-solving skills that lead to ongoing process  
improvement; evidence of ability to meet University standards in  
publication and professional service commensurate with appointment as  
a clinical faculty member.

ADDITIONAL DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in pre-order searching and copy cataloging in a large  
academic library; familiarity with acquiring, cataloging, and  
classifying health sciences materials; accounting experience;  
experience in a consortial environment.

SALARY/RANK/CONTRACT: Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications  
and experience; entry level faculty appointments begin at $47,000;  
faculty status; twelve month appointment with 24 days vacation; 12  
days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid  
holidays; paid medical insurance (contribution based on annual  
salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans  
available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one  
of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System  
compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until  
withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment  
required; physical examination at University Health Service is  
required upon appointment.
