Since I'm on a role, thought I'd respond to Doug's question. We are an
OhioLINK library, which has facilitated the purchase of ebooks for the
member libraries. Each member contributes to the cost of the various
packages based a formula established in the central office. We
currently have over 30,000 ebooks in our system, which we would not have
been able to even consider purchasing on our own. Establishing our own
account, however, gives us the ability to purchase titles which are not
included in the agreements brokered by OhioLINK.
I think Doug's question does bring into the question the process by
which titles are selected at the consortium level and providing a
mechanism for member libraries to have input. This could certainly
eliminate additional expenditure of already very limited funds. I think
I will explore this myself. Thanks for raising the question, Doug!

Subject: Re: [ACQNET-L] eBook Purchasing Follow-up--role of consortia?
This has been an interesting thread to follow and raises another,
related topic:
What role can (or should) consortia play in supporting ebook purchases
for member libraries? Consortia have played a significant role in
leveraging buying power to improve terms and pricing for ejournals but
not yet in the area of ebooks.
I am preparing a brief presentation on this topic for the April ICOLC
meeting and would be interested in hearing if others are exploring ebook
purchases via consortia. If not, do you see ways in which consortia can
help your libraries in this rapidly evolving area?
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged. Thanks.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] eBook Purchasing Follow-up
Thank you to those of you who responded to my inquiry about purchasing
eBooks. Your comments really helped me solidify the approach we should
take and I'm confident about the recommendation I will submit to my
director. It truly helps when you can talk things over with colleagues,
even when it's via email.
Again, thank you!!--Laverne
