Hi Laverne.
At SJSU Library, we now purchase the vast majority of our individual ebook
titles via a jobber. We still get some large collections and packages
directly from publishers and aggregators, but title-by-title, we've found
it easier to use a jobber when possible.
When looking at this option, our goal with ebooks was to mimic, as closely
as possible anyway, our print book workflow. We had already been using
YBP as a primary print vendor for some time, using the Gobi interface for
selecting & ordering, getting EOCR's, PromptCat records and invoices, etc.
When we were buying individual ebook titles direct via publishers or
aggregators, we had a different workflow to contend with for each supplier
regarding all aspects of the order. This multitude of processes and
suppliers really complicated our workflows.
Now that we use YBP for ebook orders, we have been able to consolidate the
selecting & ordering, EOCR, and invoicing pieces of the process. We
still get the full MARC records for our ebooks a variety of ways,
depending on the provider, but the process is much more streamlined than
it was when we bought them all over the place. I believe you can get MARC
records for your ebooks via YBP as well, if you opt for their ebook
cataloging service, but we have not taken that step yet ourselves.
Regarding service and speed, I would say it is at least as good as it was
when we ordered "direct," meaning having YBP in the middle really hasn't
slowed the process down. Overall, it has definitely improved our ebook
process.
Hope this helps.

[ACQNET-L] eBook Purchasing
For years, we have provided access to ebooks, via our local OPAC, by
virtue of membership in a state-wide consortium. We are now considering
purchasing titles, not part of consortium purchases, on our own, and I’m
wondering about the pros and cons of purchasing through a library jobber,
such as YBP, vs individual aggregators, such as ebrary, Netlibrary, EBL,
Gale, etc.
I’d like to know what others of you are doing. Thanks, in advance, for
your insights.--Lcj
