ALA Midwinter 2010 Technical Services Workflow Efficiency Interest Group
Chairs: Robin Champieux and Dracine Hodges
Monday, January 18, 2010, 1:30 -3:30pm, BCEC-Room 160A
Topic: Tech Services: Offsite and Out of Sight?
Technical services work is changing. What is performed, how it is
performed and where it is performed are shifting, sometimes radically,
to better meet the demands of current trends, user expectations, and
future innovations. A particular development is the move of technical
service units from main libraries to offsite locations. The separation
of library technical services units from public service units and
collections has been supported as a means to provide more user space and
workflow efficiencies; however, it has also been criticized as impacting
service and for divorcing patrons and library staff. We will explore
this trend, its motivations and consequences.
Two panelists from libraries that have made or are in the process of
making this change will join us. We will hear preliminary results of a
recent survey of technical services librarians and staff in public and
academic libraries whose departments are not located in the main library
or with the main collections. In addition, our panelists will discuss
particular challenges as well as tangible benefits for the library
system, staff, and patrons.
Panelists:
Nancy Gibbs, Head of Acquisitions, Duke University
Melanie McGurr, Coordinator, Authorities and Database Maintenance, The
Ohio State University
