Re: textbooks
The Ohio State University Libraries had a policy of not buying textbooks
until 2005, when we began to purchase one copy of certain textbooks if
they met special criteria. $10,000. per year was set aside for this
project. Originally, the books were on open reserve shelving, but
too many were stolen. Some were stolen by non-campus people who
tried to sell them to local bookstores for cash. They are now on
closed reserve, so theft is no longer an issue because a university ID
must be presented. Here are the procedures. Individual names
have been replaced with job titles for clarity.
--------------------------
Textbook Project
Effective: 11/16/05
Goal: Serve undergraduates by acquiring selected textbooks to place
on reserve for some larger courses.
Procedures:
Textbook coordinator will coordinate with Undergraduate Student
Government or student groups to identify textbook titles to be acquired
and placed on reserve for patrons. Criteria may include: course is
primarily for lower level undergraduates, large enrollment, high priced
textbook, does not include workbook, etc.
- After titles are identified, Coordinator will send list to
Monographs Department (MOD) to order:
- List clearly identified as “TEXTBOOK PROJECT”
- ISBN or enough bib data to identify specific edition needed
- Number of copies of each title to be ordered
(typically 1-3
copies, plus one copy, if needed, by Disability Services for handicapped
students)
- MOD will acquire titles in a timely manner using the most
appropriate source. Defaults for textbook project will be:
- Loc = Main Library Reserve
- Internal Note = Textbook Project
- Internal Note = Course name and number (if supplied)
- Order RUSH when appropriate to be available for needed
quarter/semester
- RUSH process, catalog, and label upon receipt
- Upon receipt in Main Library, they will:
- Place copies on closed reserve
- Coordinator will:
- Monitor expenditures on text1
-
Coordinate removing older textbook titles from reserve
-
Serve as liaison to Undergraduate Student Government, MOD, Reserves, etc.
