Duke University Libraries are actively recruiting for a Head of
Collection Development to lead the continuing development of a major
research library collection in the context of rapid changes in the
nature of scholarship and scholarly communication.
Since its founding in 1924, Duke University has grown into one of the
most highly ranked universities in the world, with library holdings
among the largest of private universities in the United States. The Duke
University Libraries are the shared center of the university's
intellectual life, connecting people and ideas. They consist of the
recently expanded and renovated William R. Perkins Library, Bostock
Library, Lilly Library, the Music Library and the Rare Book, Manuscript,
and Special Collections Library, complemented by independently
administered professional school libraries in business, divinity, law,
and medicine.
The Head of Collection Development will provide leadership, vision and
strategic direction for the Duke University Libraries in the development
and management of the collections of the university libraries, insuring
that their scope and caliber are appropriate to support the mission of
Duke University. Working within a collaborative and service-oriented
environment, s/he oversees the collections services activities of
division coordinators and subject specialist librarians. As head of the
Collection Development Department, s/he manages the department and the
collections budget. S/He reports to the Associate University Librarian
for Collections Services.
